about

I was watching a Netflix series a while back with a short animated clip of a bird leaving its cage for the first time. This mental image was imprinted on my mind and blossomed into a song about a bird who had it all: a roof over his head, an owner that fed him and a nice view of the window. Though he tried to convince himself otherwise, he constantly felt depressed and empty knowing there was more out there in the real world.

The next morning he made up his mind to leave and as he sailed out the window, he quickly realized his body and wings were too weak for flight and fell to the concrete. He was weakened by what he thought was protecting him. Throughout the song the bird sings the chorus, "Go easy on me, as I'm swimming in the deep end. Go easy on me, as I face another dead end."

One of my favorite quotes is "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" (Plato). For me, this song is a reminder to be kind to people even when it's easy to be upset or angry. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Hear people out and believe them when they share their experience.

I also want to say: Be kind to yourself. Go easy. You probably have felt that you've let yourself down from time to time. Give yourself more grace than you deserve because YOU ARE WORTH IT! This world deserves you. Thanks for reading:)

lyrics

Safely behind steel and wire
I stared through the window
There's a whole world beyond the sun
But I can't go

These withered wings can't fly like they used to
These tired eyes are old and gray
I'd give it all to soar with the free birds
But I can't escape

So go easy on me
As I'm swimmin' in the deep end
Go easy on me
As I face another dead end
Go easy

The very next day, I gathered the courage
To leave this cage and this town
I stretched out my wings and sailed through the window
And spiraled to the ground

So go easy on me
As I'm swimmin' in the deep end
Go easy on me
As I face another dead end

Here I am, won't you take me as I am?
Won't you hold me in your arms?
Cause my legs can hardly stand

Here I am won't you take me as I am?
As reality's setting in
And I may never fly again
Never fly again

So go easy on me
As I'm swimmin' in the deep end
Go easy on me
As I face another dead end
Go easy
